What’s the scoop on pH Neutral Floor Cleaners?
On the hunt for cleaning supplies, you may notice products labeled as pH neutral and wonder what that means exactly. At EcoClean, we’re big fans of pH neutral cleaners and we want to share why we think they’re great.
Keep reading to find out what makes a cleaning agent “pH-neutral” and how it’s important for your health, your environment, and of course, your cleaning needs.
So, what are pH neutral cleaners?
A quick trip back to chemistry class …
The pH scale measures the acidity or alkalinity of a solution through a rating of 0 to 14. Cleaning agents that fall in the range between 0 and 6 are considered acidic, while ones between 8 and 14 are identified as alkaline. If a cleaning product is marked as “neutral,” it has a true pH of 6.5 to 7.5, making it a non-hazardous solution.
What’s so great about them?
Without chemicals like hydroxides, silicates, or phosphates, pH-neutral cleaners are less harsh than acidic or alkaline products. Here’s why:
- Better For Your Health
-
-
- Since they’re closer to the human pH (7.35 to 7.45), cleaners with a neutral pH decrease the risk of skin irritation and other health effects.
-
- Friendly To Your Environment
-
-
- pH-neutral cleaners create a safer atmosphere because they’re less likely to release toxic fumes.
-
- Great For Your Home
-
- Highly acidic or alkaline products are corrosive and can damage surfaces while pH-neutral cleaners are much more gentle and leave surfaces unharmed.
Even though pH-neutral products are easier on materials, they still have stain-fighting powers. For example, carpet extractors that carry a pH-neutral cleaner increase freshness by preventing the appearance of salt residue on carpets and entry mats.
While acidic and alkaline solutions may pack a stronger punch against grease, rust, lime or calcium, it’s important to go into every cleaning project fully educated. The wrong cleaner can create pH imbalances that eventually cause chemical build-up, which unfortunately shortens the lifespan of a hard surface or carpet.
Always read labels and research the materials that you’re working with.
